Marx Cards Customer FAQs
UPDATE: May 4, 2022
On February 7, 2022, Marx Cards declared bankruptcy under chapter 7 of the Bankruptcy Code. During a bankruptcy proceeding, such as Marx Cards’ case, there is an immediate automatic stay on the assets in the bankruptcy estate. PSA has worked diligently to facilitate the expeditious return of the cards to owners by filing multiple pleadings with the Bankruptcy Court to argue that the cards in PSA’s possession should not be part of the Marx Cards bankruptcy estate. Notwithstanding PSA’s efforts, the Bankruptcy Court denied PSA’s request for authority to implement a process to return the cards to their rightful owners and suggested that PSA file a separate request.
However, on May 2, 2022, Bankruptcy Court entered a docket entry closing the bankruptcy case of Marx Cards as reflected in docket entry #28 below. Unless there are any new developments, PSA will re-commence returning the cards that were submitted through Marx Cards back to their owners.
PSA thanks all affected card owners for their patience. A PSA Customer Service rep will reach out to provide instructions once your cards are ready to be returned. In the meantime, customers are able to check their order status in the search field below.
Note: If your submission status is “Order Complete,” a PSA rep will reach out to provide instructions once cards have been separated and paired with their rightful owners.
How many customers, cards, and orders are involved in this case?
At this time, PSA has about 50,000 cards across roughly 600 separate orders, all at various stages in the grading process. Note that there are multiple customers to one submission in many cases. We do not currently have an exact number of impacted customers, but we can verify that we have received over 500 unique emails thus far, with more coming in daily.
Does PSA have my cards?
PSA has created a search function (see above) that allows you to enter your submission number and determine its current status. If your submission does not come up, it is either not at PSA or you likely have an incorrect digit. Please know that PSA did not have visibility into whose cards were in each submission until Friday, January 28, when Marx Cards’ bankruptcy attorney provided a scanned PDF of their customer/submission list, which is not filterable. We are currently working through everyone’s emails and Marx Cards’ customer list to determine which customers are tied to which orders, but this process is involved and will take at least 1-2 months. In the meantime, if your submission number does not come up in the search above, please contact Customer Service by email ([email protected]) and they will check the list manually. Please provide your full name, IG handle, and the mailing address you provided Marx Cards.
What does the Marx Cards documentation contain?
Marx Cards provided a 62-page scanned PDF that contains the PSA submission number, the customer’s name and/or social media username, card quantities, the customer’s mailing address, and, in some very rare instances, an email or phone number. There are multiple customers to one order in many cases, so this does make the sorting process much more difficult. To verify ownership and prepare returns, we will be relying on verifiable customer documentation.
What constitutes verifiable customer documentation?
PSA is requiring the following to verify your submission/cards are with us and to coordinate returns:
- Your full name
- Your social media handle
- Mailing address provided to Marx Cards at the time of submission (if different from current address);
- Valid Driver’s License or state-issued photo ID;
- Any invoices or receipts (either in email, PDF, or screenshot format) confirming your submission to Marx Cards and showing their company name, email, the list of cards in question, and your name and contact information;
- PSA submission number(s);
- List of your submitted cards per submission form.
*Note: If you are missing one or more of the following, we will work with you as best as we can to determine what submission number your cards may be under, but please be advised that the lack of information will delay the process so we will need your patience due to the number of cards and customers involved in this case. At this time, it is difficult to estimate how long this process might take, but we anticipate it will take at least 3-4 months to sort through.
Can I see the documentation they provided?
Due to the fact that this document contains customer names, mailing addresses, and other contact information, we cannot share this list with the public or any inquiring individuals for the security of all of the affected individuals .
Will PSA return my cards graded?
PSA has publicly stated that our intention is to return all cards graded for customers who submitted directly to Marx Cards provided their account is in good standing with PSA (i.e., their account is not blocked).
How do I know if my account is blocked?
If you can login to your PSA account online here, your account is most likely in good standing. If you have any other questions regarding your account’s status in general, please feel free to contact our Customer Service department by calling (800) 325-1121 or emailing [email protected].
Will I have to pay to get my cards back graded?
In this extraordinary situation, PSA will NOT be charging the original grading fees, provided that the following is true:
- The cards were submitted to Marx Cards directly or through another submitter of theirs whose account is in good standing with PSA.
- Your personal PSA account is in good standing. (If you do not have a PSA account, that is not a problem. Please create one here: PSA Sign Up.)
- You have proof that you submitted through Marx Cards via an invoice or receipt of some sort, which can come in the form of an email, PDF, or screenshot as detailed above.
- You pay the applicable return shipping fees, which will be required for each individual order. Unless a personal FedEx account is provided, shipping fees are based on the number of cards and values. See our Shipping Rates here.
- Keep in mind that per our terms and conditions, all orders are subject to “results review” at the end of the grading process to ensure the cards were submitted under the appropriate service level with corresponding service fees. As a result, additional fees may apply in the event that the results review demonstrates a higher service level as is PSA’s standard procedure for all submissions.
What does the “results review” process entail?
Once every step in the grading process is complete and the order is ready for shipment, a PSA pricing specialist will review the results of the order (i.e., grades and current market values) to ensure that the cards were submitted under the appropriate service level with corresponding service fees. If a card(s) are determined to be undervalued based on the final graded value, the pricing specialist may reach out directly to notify you of the necessary fee correction(s), obtain email approval to proceed, and obtain/verify a method of payment for the remaining amount owed. To be clear, in this situation PSA would only charge the difference owed. For example, if the original fee paid was $12.50 and the correct fee should be $20, PSA will simply charge $7.50 more. This process takes place through our normal course of business and is not exclusive to Marx Cards customers in any way.
What if I submitted through Gems Only Sports Cards or another submitter whose PSA account is not in good standing?
There are two options for these customers:
-
If you wish to have your cards returned graded, PSA will require that you pay the retail rates at the time of submission via e-check, check, money order or wire transfer prior to our beginning the grading process. In other words, we would charge you the retail rates from March 2021 not February 2022. All fees are based on the declared value of the cards in their graded state and are subject to the “results review” process as explained above. If you would like this option, please email Customer Service at [email protected] with the subject line: “GEMS ONLY CARDS - RETURN GRADED” and we will provide further instructions. The process will entail creating a PSA account and a new submission form online which we will then use to transfer your cards over to your name. Checks or money orders will need to be mailed to the address below with a copy of your new submission form:
PSA
ATTN: Accounting Dept
P.O. Box 6280
Newport Beach, CA 92658 - If you wish to not pay and simply want your cards mailed back, please reach out to Customer Service at [email protected] with the subject line: “GEMS ONLY CARDS - RETURN RAW.” In response, Customer Service will provide detailed instructions on next steps, which will entail creating a PSA account and a new submission form online which we will then use to transfer your cards over to your name.
In either case, you must pay the applicable shipping fees for each individual order. Unless a personal FedEx account is provided, shipping fees are based on the number of cards and values. See our Shipping Rates here.
Why is PSA handling Gems Only Sports Cards submissions differently?
Gems Only Sports Cards was never an approved PSA Dealer or Group Submitter, and PSA never listed Gems Only Sports Cards on the PSA website as one; moreover, their account is not currently in good standing with our company due to a violation of the PSA Terms & Conditions. We advise customers to do their due diligence by researching and vetting any group submitter or dealer that they choose to submit through. We would also like to stress that all customers are free to submit directly to PSA through their own account: PSA Sign Up. By choosing to submit indirectly to PSA through a PSA Dealer or Group Submitter, customers do not have a direct account or relationship with PSA to inquire about the status of their cards.
I submitted directly to Marx Cards and want my cards graded. What should I do next?
Our team is currently separating your direct submissions, which are to be graded, from the Gems Only submissions, which are not to be graded unless the owner is willing to pay the necessary fees. We are using the documentation we received from Marx Cards and your incoming emails to do this. Once we have the two groups sorted, the direct orders will simply be placed back into the production line to get completed and graded under their existing order. Once the order is complete, we will separate the cards by customer (as there can be multiple customers to one order in some cases) utilizing the documentation we have requested to verify ownership. If we can securely match up the cards with the information we were provided, we will reach out to have you create a new submission form under your personal PSA account for the return shipping. If we cannot verify them, we will reach out to obtain more information. In either case, a rep will be in contact as orders are completed. To be a step ahead and if you haven’t done so already, please create your PSA account here: PSA Sign Up
What if my cards are already done and ready to ship now?
If the court confirms that we may return your cards (after April 12th), PSA will prioritize the completed orders to arrange their return. This will require you to have a PSA account open and you will be asked to create a submission form to pay for your return shipping and to track the shipment. PSA will need to sort all customers cards from existing orders, so please be advised this could take several months after the ruling. We appreciate your patience and we will be in contact to coordinate next steps.
What if I’m local and prefer to pick up my graded or ungraded cards in person?
PSA is not currently open to the general public for onsite pick ups and drop offs for various reasons, including but not limited to COVID restrictions and concerns. At this time, a shipment will be the only option for returns.
How long will it take for my cards to get graded?
Please be advised that the grading process will not be expedited for these orders. Once the Marx Cards orders are separated out, these orders will be placed back in line according to their entry date to be fair to other customers. It is expected that these orders may take 3-4 months to be fully completed and shipped back under your account. We ask for patience as the recording of hundreds of inquiries, the correlated documentation to verify ownership, and the sorting of these orders is adding extreme delays to the overall completion process. Furthermore, PSA is also affected by the bankruptcy filing of Marx Cards, given that PSA is owed just under $800,000 in unpaid fees. This is a unique situation, so we ask for your understanding given the circumstances and the fact that PSA is completing these orders at no additional cost to you, despite realizing a loss.
I submitted my cards to Marx Cards a year ago. Why have my cards taken so long to get processed by PSA?
Last spring PSA experienced a mass influx of submissions that reached its peak in March of 2021. The incoming rate was unsustainable operationally, so PSA was forced to respond by closing its lowest services levels across the board. Here is the statement made by our president at the time. Many of the orders submitted during this time period took several months to even get entered into our database given the sheer volume and lack of resources, so they have been the most impacted in terms of turnaround times. Marx Cards was part of this surge in group submissions that served to impact processing times, as most of their current open orders are dated between March and May, and therefore those orders have been slowly moving through the process along with the millions of other cards we received at that time.
