The 1989 Donruss Baseball set consists of 660 cards, each measuring 2-1/2" by 3-1/2”. The front of each card bears a posed or in-action color photo with a black left- and right-side border and a color-shifting top and bottom border. A team logo is placed at the corner while the respective player’s name and position are printed within the top border area. This Donruss set is anchored by the regular issue cards of Cal Ripken, Jr. (#51), Robin Yount (#55), Ozzie Smith (#63), Don Mattingly (#74), Barry Bonds (#92), Mark McGwire (#95), Nolan Ryan (#154), and Roger Clemens (#280). Key rookie cards include such high-caliber players as Sandy Alomar, Jr. (#28), Craig Biggio (#561), Ken Griffey, Jr. (#33), Randy Johnson (#42), Curt Schilling (#635), Gary Sheffield (#31), and John Smoltz (#642). Subsets include Diamond King (#s 1-27) and Related Rookies (#s 28-47). The set features two variations: card fronts carry both glossy and non-glossy horizontal lines; card backs carry the phrase “Denotes Led League” with either an asterisk to the left of the lettering or on both sides. However, neither version commands a premium. A total of 106 cards are double-printed in order to accommodate “Bonus MVP” cards.
