1989 Fleer

The 1989 Fleer Baseball set consists of 660 cards, each measuring 2-1/2" by 3-1/2”. The front of each card bears a posed or in-action color photo framed by a gray-border background with white and yellow trim. The set is anchored by the rookie cards of Gary Sheffield (#196), Craig Biggio (#353), Randy Johnson (#381), Ken Griffey Jr. (#548) and John Smoltz (#602). Subsets include rookie pairs (#s 640-653) and checklists (#s 654-660). The 1989 Fleer set contains one of the most famous error cards, Billy Ripken (#616), in which a four-letter word is printed on the bottom of his bat. Several different corrected variations exist, with the most common being a black box covering the bat knob. Another noteworthy error card belongs to Randy Johnson’s rookie card in which a normally blacked-out cigarette billboard advertisement is visible. The most notable variations are those of Oakland A’s players found with either white or yellow halos and red rather than green photo borders.
