Extras - Magic Photos Image Gallery
The Topps Company was founded by the Shorin family in Brooklyn in 1938 as a maker of chewing gum. A decade later, Topps packaged small Magic Photos, its very first cards, inside gum wrappers. Blank fronts are "developed" with a special solution to reveal sepia-toned photos of athletes, movie stars, explorers, and other subjects, even dogs. Backs pose trivia questions about who or what's on fronts. The 19 Magic Photos featuring baseball Hall of Famers are sometimes considered Topps' first baseball cards, and are the most desirable of the set, though it wasn't until 1951 that the company issued its first dedicated baseball series.
