Pitt’s first NFL Hall of Famer, Joe Schmidt helped define the middle linebacker position in the NFL. He played on some poor Pitt teams but broke through as a Detroit Lions all time great.
Russ Grimm played center at the University of Pittsburgh and helped form one of the strongest offensive lines in college football. His play as the line’s anchor helped the Panthers to a 22-2 record over the 1979 and 1980 seasons, including a pair of Top 10 finishes in the polls. As a senior, he helped the team to an 11-1 mark and Pitt was selected by The New York Times computer poll as the country’s No. 1 team.
Doleman played football collegiately at the University of Pittsburgh.[5] He was a star linebacker and defensive end for the Pitt Panthers from 1981 to 1984. He ended his career at Pitt with 25 sacks which was good for third all-time at the time of his departure. That total still ranks sixth in the Pitt annals.
Elected to the NFL Hall of Fame in 2012, Martin was an exciting runner at the University of Pittsburgh. He amassed over 3000 yards from scrimmage in an injury plagued career. In 1993 he led the Big East with 1334 yards from scrimmage and opened his 1994 campaign with 251 yards rushing against Texas before an ankle injury sidelined him for the rest of the season. Drafted by the Patriots with the 74th pick in the 3rd round he went on to rush for 14,101 yards in his hall of fame career.
A two-time first team All-Big East Cornerback, Revis elected to forego his senior year and declare for the NFL Draft. A semifinalist for the Jim Thorpe Award, named to the Rivals All-America Team (third team) as a 'utility' player. His 73-yard punt return against West Virginia was selected the 2006 'College Football Play of the Year' by ESPN. 2004 First team Freshman All-America by The Sporting News...second team Freshman All-America by Rivals.com.
