The 1931 W502 hand cut set consists of 60 cards and appear identical, except in numbering, to the 1928 W502 version, with each card measuring 1-3/8” by 2-1/2”. Each black-and-white card features a player’s portrait or the player in action centered near the top with the player’s name printed in capital letters at the bottom adjacent to a number in parentheses. The backs display designations of “One Bagger”, “Three Bagger”, or “Home Run” and encourage the collector to “Return to Storekeeper and Exchange for a Sponge Base Ball.” There are also blank backs available. Though it is unknown how, exactly, that the cards were distributed, it is assumed that they were dispensed within packages of candy or some other similar product. Keyes to the set includes Robert “Lefty” Grove (#13), Jimmy Foxx (#16), Babe Ruth (#29), Lou Gehrig (#32), Rogers Hornsby (#40) as well as numerous member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
