1927 York Caramels Type 2 (E210)
The 1927 York Caramel E210 Type 2 set is among the scarcest and most sought-after sets of the 1920s. Manufactured by a Pennsylvania caramel candy company and consisting of 60 cards, each piece measures 1-3/8” x 2-1/2” and features a black-and-white player image with a white border and his name identified at the bottom border, along with the card number. The Type 2 exemplars differ from their Type 1 counterparts in that they carry a glossy finish. The reverse features the player’s name and team – oriented sideways and facing right -- along with the company’s name. A good percentage of players in the offering later earned induction into Cooperstown. The set is anchored Burleigh Grimes (#1), Red Faber (#4), Gabby Hartnett (#5), Babe Ruth (#6), Rogers Hornsby (#13), Pie Traynor (#14), Hack Wilson (#25), Ty Cobb (#27), Tris Speaker (#28), and Walter Johnson (#45). The set features a fair number of errors and variations. The cards of Walter Ruether (#2), Joe Dugan (#3), Bob O’Farrell (#12), Jesse Haines (#30), and Clifton Heathcote (#35) were originally printed with the players’ last name misspelled, while Rogers Peckinpaugh (#56) was initially misprinted as “Roger Peckinpaugh.” Wilson’s card (#25) actually pictures Art Wilson, while William H. Terry’s card (#46) shows Zeb Terry Similarly, the card of George H. Burns (#9) shows George J. Burns, and Sherwood Smith (#31) pictures Jack Coom. Card #58 exists as either Clarence Galloway or Lester Bell.
