1919-21 W514 All-Time Finest
The 1919 W514 set is comprised of 120 cards that measure approximately 1-7/16" x 2-1/2". The front of the cards portray a comparatively crude drawing of the athletes portrayed with a color background and a thin black line containing the pose. A thick, blank border frames all of the elements. The player’s name, team, position and the card number all are identified at the bottom of the frame. Card backs are blank. This issue is packed with Hall of Fame and star talent. The key cards belong to Babe Ruth (#2 – identified as “Home Run King”) and Joe Jackson (#15). The set is also anchored by Bill Southworth (#16), Max Carey (#22), Eddie Collins (#25), Miller Huggins (#34), Clark Griffith (#41), Ty Cobb (#43), Rogers Hornsby (#56), Ray Schalk (#60), Walter Johnson (#94), Tris Speaker (#102), Casey Stengel (#113), Although the cards are thought to have been issued about 1919, variations exist showing players with different team affiliations including Rabbit Maranville (#21), Dave Bancroft (#40), Bob Roth (#47), and Hugh Jennings (#106). This has led some to theorize that these cards were actually issued over a period of years. Like all W-cards, the W514 series were strip cards that had to be cut from strips available at various outlets such as grocery or candy stores. They also could be purchased as full strips. These collectibles are scarcely found in their original state, as surviving singles were most often damaged at the time of cutting or by their early owners.
