Mark Messier - 1985 O-Pee-Chee

Mark Douglas Messier (January 18, 1961-) was one of the greatest players in the history of the NHL, considered one of the greatest leader the league has ever seen and is the only player in NHL history to captain two different teams to Stanley Cup championships. Mark impressed scouts at left wing and center for the St. Albert Saints of the Alberta Junior Hockey League and the Houston Apollos of the Central Hockey League. Messier signed with the Indianapolis Racers, playing with the Racers and Cincinnati Stingers of the World Hockey Association in his first professional campaign. The Edmonton Oilers, now of the NHL, then drafted Messier in the third round of the 1979 NHL Entry Draft. Mark was one of the most complete players of his generation with an excellent scoring touch, decent stickhandling ability, fierce competitive nature and a toughness matched by few. Mark was a part of a highly offensive Oilers team in the 1980s that included Hall of Famers Wayne Gretzky, Jari Kurri, Paul Coffey, Glenn Anderson and Grant Fuhr that derailed the four-time Stanley Cup champion New York Islanders in 1984 to capture the league’s title. In 12 seasons with Edmonton, Messier led the Oilers to five Stanley Cups (1984, 1985, 1987, 1988, 1990). He was named the Conn Smythe Trophy winner in 1984 as the playoff MVP behind his 8 eight goals and 18 assists in 19 games. Mark was named the 1990 Hart Memorial Trophy and Ted Lindsay Award winner as the league’s Most Valuable Player voted on by sports writers and the NHL Players Assocaiton, respectively.

Mark had ten seasons in the NHL with 30 or more goals including thre with over 40 and one over 50. In 1991, Messier joined the New York Rangers and led them to their first Stanley Cup cahmpionhsip in 1994, ending a 54-year drought. He famously guaranteed a Game 6 victory in the Eastern Conference Finals against the New Jersey Devils, backing it up as he scored a hat trick in the game. Messier played 25 season in the NHL with the Oilers (1979-1991), the Rangers (1991-1997, 2000-2004) and the Vancouver Canucks 1997-2000). In 1991-92, he earned his second Hart Memorial Trophy and Ted Lindsay Award. He was named to four NHL All-Star First Teams and played in 15 NHL All-Star Games. Mark Messier ended his playing career following the 2003-04 season scoring 694 goals and 1,193 assists for 1,887 points in 1,756 regular season games. In the playoffs, Mark added 109 goals and 186 assists in 236 postseason matches winning six Stanley Cup rings. Mark is second all-time in points (1,887), playoff points (295) and regular season games played (1,756). Mark Messier was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2007. Following his playing days, Messier joined the front office of the New York Rangers.
