Lemieux underwent aggressive treatment for the disease, eventually driving the ailment into remission. Following his last radiation treatment, Lemieux flew to Philadelphia to play against the Flyers that evening, registering an assist and receiving a standing ovation from the Philadelphia crowd. He led the team to 17 consecutive wins and the franchise’s first President’s Trophy that season as the league leader in points, though they bowed out of the playoffs following a loss to the New York Islanders in the Division Finals.
He retired again in 1997 and was inducted into Hockey Hall of Fame that same year, becoming the ninth player to be honored with induction prior to the mandatory three-year waiting period.
