Michel Goulet - 1984 O-Pee-Chee

Michel Goulet (April 21, 1960-) scored his 1,000th point and 500th goal, one week shy of a year apart in February 1991 and 1992, respectively. Michel began his professional career playing left wing for the Birmingham Bulls of the World Hockey Association in 1978-79, despite not speaking a lick of English when arriving in Alabama. He scored 28 goals and 30 assists in 78 games with the Bulls playing with Rick Vaive and Rick Adduono. When the WHA and NHL merged the following season, Goulet was eligible for the 1979 NHL Entry Draft and was snatched up by the Quebec Nordiques with the 20th overall pick. His scoring totals continued to rise as seasons past, playing with the Stastny brother, culminating in 1982-83 when he scored a career-high 57 goals adding 48 assists for 105 points. This was also the first of four consecutive 50-goal seasons. Michel Goulet scored 20 or more goals in every one of the 16 seasons other than his last. The Nordiques twice made runs during the Stanley Cup playoff only to lose in the conference finals on both occasions. Goulet played for the Nordiques from 1979-1990 before being traded to the Chicago Blackhawks for the remainder of his career (1989-1994). The fast paced, finesse play he became accustomed to in Quebec turned to hard-hitting, grinding and mucking in the corners in his new city of Chicago. Though not known for his aggressive play or characterized as a physical guy, Michel never backed down from physical play. Goulet settled into a veteran role of helping younger players develop and become stars, as his 50-goal seasons were left behind in Quebec, though he did score 20-plus goals in his first three full seasons in Chicago. In 1994, Michel suffered an unfortunate injury as he crashed into the boards at the Montreal Forum, striking his head causing a severe concussion that led to his retirement. Michel Goulet finished his career with 548 NHL goals and 604 assists for 1,152 total points in 1,089 games. He also had 28 WHA goals and 30 assists in 78 career WHA games. Michel Goulet was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1998.
