Tim Horton - 1967 Topps

Myles Gilbert “Tim” Horton (January 12, 1930 - February 21, 1974) was the prototypical stay-at-home defenseman who used his tremendous strength and rugged, in your face playing style to keep opposing attackers in check. He began his professional hockey career in the Toronto Maple Leafs organization with the St. Michael’s College team before playing for the Pittsburgh Hornets, the Leafs’ American Hockey League minor league affiliate. Horton joined the big club on a full-time basis in 1952 and patrolled the blue line for 20 seasons in Toronto (1949-1970). Tim often helped lead the charge through the neutral zone assisting forwards on rushes, though his real skill remained in the defensive zone. He was a big, durable rearguard who had to ability to keep his cool, collecting a limited number of penalties despite being somewhat of an enforcer. From 1958-1968, Horton missed only 14 games, 13 or which were in the 1960-61 campaign, and appeared in a then-record 486 consecutive regular season games during that span. Horton was the cornerstone of a Leafs defense that helped lead them to three consecutive Stanley Cup Championships (1962-1964) adding another three years later (1967).

In 1964, Tim made an incredible investment when he opened the first Tim Horton Doughnut Shop. By 1967, he was a multimillionaire off the ice as the company expanded their franchise system to over 40 locations. (Today, there are over 3,000 locations throughout Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom and beyond.) With many of his teammate moving on or retiring after the Leafs 1967 Stanley Cup victory, Horton remained with the Leafs for one more season, demanding double his salary as one of the few remaining veterans on a team of youngsters. When the team struggled to improve, Tim was traded to the New York Rangers (1970-1971), where he spent one more full season before becoming draft material for two expansion teams, the Pittsburgh Penguins (1971-72) and the Buffalo Sabres (1972-1974). He was named to three NHL All-Star First Teams and appeared in seven NHL All-Star Games. Following a game in Toronto in February 1974, when playing for the Sabres, Horton was returning to his home in Buffalo and died in a single car accident. He finished his career with 115 goals and 403 assists in 1,446 games. He also scored 11 playoff goals and 39 assists in 126 playoff games capturing four Stanley Cup titles. Tim Horton was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1977.
