1933-34 V129 "Anonymous"

Released by a still-unidentified manufacturer during hockey’s 1933-34 campaign, the V129 set consists of 50 cards, each one 1-5/8” x 2-7/8”. It is among the scarcest of all early sport issues. Card fronts feature a black-and-white player photo with a white border around the image. The player’s name is listed in the border area beneath the picture, while the back has the card number along the athlete’s and both English and French text. This set is anchored by King Clancy (#8) and Howie Morentz (#41), as well as by the rookie cards of Charlie Conacher (#5) and Eddie Shore (#37). The Harry Oliver rookie card (#39) is widely agreed to have been an intentional short print, thus making it next-to-impossible to complete the set. As a result, the V129 issue is considered “complete” at 49 cards. With the series among the toughest of all vintage hockey sets, any full set … even in a lesser grade … can be a challenge to complete.
