Patrick Lavon Mahomes II (September 17, 1995 - ) is the son of former Major League Baseball pitcher, Pat Mahomes. He is also the starting quarterback of the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League.
Following a successful high school athletic career, Mahomes went on to play baseball and football at Texas Tech University. He left the baseball team after his sophomore year to concentrate on football and quickly became one of the most touted quarterbacks in the college game. He had an excellent junior season in which he led all NCAA Division I FBS players in passing yards (5,052) and passing touchdowns (53). He left school early to enter the 2017 NFL Draft, and was selected by the Kansas City Chiefs with the tenth overall pick in the draft.
Mahomes spent his first NFL season in the shadows of Chiefs starter, Alex Smith. He moved into the top spot the following season when Smith was traded away, and instantly made a name for himself in professional football. In his first season at the helm, Mahomes passed for 5,097 yards, 50 touchdowns with only 12 interceptions. The Chiefs finished with a 12-4 record and won the AFC Western Division title before falling to the New England Patriots in overtime at the AFC Championship Game. Post-season accolades flooded in and Mahomes was named to his first Pro Bowl, First Team All-Pro, NFL Offensive Player of the Year and NFL Most Valuable Player. While his individual statistics fell off a bit in 2019, Mahomes again led the Chiefs to the playoffs where they defeated the Tennessee Titans in the AFC Championship Game 35-24 to send the Chiefs their first Super Bowl in 50 years.
