1974 Topps
Topps 1974 Football set consists of 528 cards, each measuring 2-1/2" by 3-1/2”. The set uses creative design elements, surrounding a color image with a “goalpost” in team colors. The player’s name and position are on either side of the crossbar and the team name is identified within a rectangular color bar across the bottom border. Each card back includes player statistics and highlights. Subsets include All-Pro (#s 121-144), league leaders (#s328-333) and post-season action (#s 460-463). The set is anchored by Fran Tarkenton (#129), O.J. Simpson (#130), Jack Ham (#137), Johnny Unitas (#150), Steve Spurrier (#215), Franco Harris (#220), Dick Butkus (#230), Ken Stabler (#451), Terry Bradshaw (#470) and Roger Staubach (#500). This set also contains the rookie cards of Ahmad Rashad (#105). Chuck Foreman (#113), Harold Carmichael (#121), John Matuszak (#148), Ed Marinaro (#189), Ray Guy (#219), John Hannah (#383) and Bert Jones (#524). Copyright variations abound in the set, with card #s 26, 129, 130, 156, 162, 219, 265-364, 367-422, and 424-528 bearing two asterisks with the copyright line, rather than just one. Cards from the 50-card Topps set printed for the Parker Brothers’ Pro Draft football board game are often confused with this 1974 offering, with one of the differences being that the reverse of each board game card ends with the 1972 season.
