1989 Topps

The 1989 Topps Baseball set consists of 792 cards, each measuring 2-1/2" by 3-1/2”. A white frame team-appropriate colored piping surrounds a color player photo on the card front. The team name appears at the bottom of the cardboard with the athlete’s name in a color banner printed at the corner. Card backs feature the Topps name, player name, card number, and player statistics. Mark McGwire (#70), Paul Molitor (#110), Tom Glavine (#157), Ryne Sandberg (#360), Rickey Henderson (#380), Roger Clemens (#450), Mark Grace (#465), Robin Young (#615), and Barry Bonds (#620) highlight the set. Rookie cards include Gary Sheffield (#343), John Smoltz (#382), Jim Abbott (#573), Randy Johnson (#647), Sandy Alomar, Jr. (#648), Brady Anderson (#757), Dante Bichette (#761), and Robin Ventura (#764). Subsets in the 1989 Topps offering are Record Breakers (#s 1-7), All-Stars (#s 386-407), Turn Back the Clock (#s 661-665); First Draft Picks, Future Stars, Team Leaders subsets were distributed throughout the set. Franklin Stubbs (#697) features an error with the Dodgers’ team name printed in white script rather than gray; Stan Jefferson (#689) was originally issued with a pink marking rather than the intended violet marking; Bob Welch (#605) was first printed without a tag line for his pitching record. The cards issued for Vince Coleman (#90) and German Gonzalez (#746) are also both errors with their respective birth dates misidentified.
