1971 Topps Greatest Moments

The 1971 Topps Baseball’s Greatest Moments set consists of 55 cards. The 2-1/2" by 4-3/4" horizontally orientated cards, a separate issue from the 1971 Topps regular set, boast an action photo of the player’s accomplishment with a small head shot of the athlete along the side with his name and set title “One of Baseball’s Greatest Moments.” The reverse of each card is black-bordered with a detail from the front photo plus a black-and-white newspaper headline format detailing his heroics. The name of the newspaper reflects the hometown newspaper of the team. The set is anchored by Hall of Famers and heroes including Thurman Munson (#1), Johnny Bench (#13), Pete Rose (#15), Ernie Banks (#36), Willie Mays (#41), Reggie Jackson (#47) and Willie McCovey (#52). Twenty-two of the cards were double-printed including Munson, Rose, Banks, Luis Aparicio, Jim Bunning, Jim Fregosi, Willie Mays, Willie McCovey and Carl Yastrzemski. The Greatest Moments set is considered one of the rarest issues of the 1970s and extremely tough to find in high grade due to the cards' size, centering issues and the black borders that were prone to chipping and wear.
