Tim McCarver - 1965 Topps Embossed

James Timothy “Tim” McCarver (October 16, 1941-) did not even play in 100 minor league games before joining the St. Louis Cardinals in 1959 at the age of 17. He shuttled back and forth from the minors for three years before becoming the Redbirds’ starting catcher for the next seven seasons. Tim quickly established himself as one of the premier defensive catchers in the National League and was particularly adept at handling a young pitching staff that included Hall of Famers Bob Gibson and Steve Carlton. In 1964, essentially as a second year starter, McCarver helped the Cardinals win the National League pennant and then the 1964 World Series over the New York Yankees. In that series, Tim hit a critical game-winning home run in the tenth inning of Game 5 and hit .478 with five RBI in 23 at-bats. Again in 1967, he helped the Redbirds win the NL and their second World Series title in four years over the Boston Red Sox. In 1968, Tim was behind the plate as flamethrower Bob Gibson set a seemingly unreachable mark with a 1.12 ERA and he turned in a Cy Young award-winning year. Gibson also won the 1970 Cy Young with McCarver catching. McCarver caught for 21 years in the Major Leagues with the Cardinals (1959-1961, 1963-1969, 1973-1974), the Philadelphia Phillies (1970-1972, 1975-1980), the Montreal Expos (1972) and the Boston Red Sox (1974-1975). Though he was traded to the Phillies two years prior to Steve Carlton, Tim virtually became Carlton’s personal catcher helping him win the 1972 pitching Triple Crown and Cy Young and the 1977 and 1980 Cy Young awards. He was a two-time All-Star and ended his career with a .271 batting average, 1,501 hits, 590 runs and 645 RBI. When McCarver retired after 21 years on the field, he has spent more than 30 years in the broadcast booth for every major network. Tim McCarver has broadcast 23 World Series and was the 2012 Ford C. Frick Award winner, honoring him for his “major contributions to baseball.”
