1964 Topps

The 1964 Topps Baseball set consists of 587 cards, each measuring 2-1/2” by 3-1/2”. Cards carry a large color photo blending into a top panel that displays the team name in bold lettering, while a panel below the picture carries the player’s name and position. The set’s low series #s 1-522 are easier to obtain than high series #s 533-587, and exists with two subsets: League Leaders and World Series. Highlights include second-year cards of Pete Rose and Willie Stargell, rookies that include Tony Conigliaro, Lou Piniella, Tommy John, Richie Allen, Tony LaRussa, Mickey Lolich and Hall of Famer Phil Niekro, and an “In Memoriam” trading card of Ken Hubbs, who died in a plane accident prior to the start of the 1964 season. The 1964 Topps Baseball set also lays claim to one of the more enjoyable twists of logic on a collectible: #561 Dave Bennett rookie card that reads, “The 19-year-old right handed curve-baller is just 18 years old.”
