Run Preventers (Gil McDougald/Bob Turley/Bobby Richardson) - 1959 Topps

Robert Lee “Bullet Bob” Turley (September 19, 1930 - March 30, 2013) won the third Cy Young in history, spanning both leagues, with a league leading 21 wins, .750 winning percentage and 19 complete games to earn his third All-Star selection while also finishing second in the American League MVP race. The St. Louis Browns signed Bob in 1948 and he spent four years of seasoning in the minors before making his Major League debut as a September call up in 1951. After only one game with the Browns in 1951, Turley enlisted in the United States Army for two years, but returned to St. Louis in 1953 appearing n 10 games that year. When the Browns relocated to the East Coast to become the Baltimore Orioles, Turley stayed with the team and earned the moniker “Bullet Bob” in his new town. Trying to determine the velocity of Turley’s fastball, the Orioles used a bullet timer, thus the nickname, and measured his heater at 98mph. During that 1954 season in Baltimore, power-pitching Bob Turley led the American League in strikeouts (185), but also showed his wildness leading in walks for the first of two consecutive seasons. He also earned his first of three All-Star selections with the O’s. As New York Yankees manager Casey Stengel tried to turn over his aging rotation, the Yankees and the Orioles swapped 18 players over the 1954 offseason with key components Turley and Don Larsen heading to the New York for Gene Woodling and Gus Triandos, among others. It was in the Big Apple that Bob enjoyed his greatest success pitching in five World Series. His best year came in 1958 when he led the Al in Wins (21), winning percentage (.750) and complete games (19) to earn the coveted AL Cy Young Award and finish second in AL MVP voting. Bob pitched eight years for the Yankees (1955-1962) and won two World Series in 1956 and 1958, winning the World Series MVP award in the latter. He was also given the 1958 Hickok Belt as the top professional athlete of the year. Turley finished his career with the Los Angeles Angels and Boston Red Sox in 1963. Bob Turley compiled a record of 101-85 with 1,265 strikeouts, 78 complete games, 12 shutouts and a 3.64 career ERA in 237 starts and 310 appearances. In World Series contention, he went 4-3 with 46 Ks and three complete games in 15 games.

Robert Clinton “Bobby” Richardson (August 19, 1935-) is the only player to win the World Series Most Valuable Player award on a losing team when he hit .367 with record setting RBI totals with 12 in the series and six in Game 3 of the 1960 World Series. Richardson possessed an exceptional glove making up for his shortcomings at the plate. Bobby won five consecutive Gold Gloves at second with the Yankees from 1961-1965 and posted a .979 career fielding percentage with 3,445 assists and 3,125 putouts in 6,713 chances. Bobby Richardson and Tony Kubek paired to make one of the best American League double-play combinations and led the AL four times in turning double plays. He was named to eight MLB All-Star Games and helped the Yankees with three World Series titles (1958, 1961, 1962). Richardson enjoyed his best campaign in 1962 when he led the American League in hits with 209, batted .302, had eight home runs, 59 RBI 11, stolen bases, won his second Gold Glove and finished second in AL MVP voting behind teammate, Mickey Mantle. In 1963, Richardson won the Lou Gehrig Memorial Award as the player who best exemplifies Gehrig’s character and integrity on and off the field. Bobby Richardson finished his career with 1,432 hits, 643 runs scored, 390 RBI and a .266 career batting average.

Gilbert James McDougald (May 19, 1928 - November 28, 2010) enjoyed a very successful career with the New York Yankees, winning eight American League pennants wearing the pinstripes, but is most often remembered for his line drive that forever altered the budding career of Cleveland Indians pitcher, Herb Score. During his rookie campaign, Gil set a since-broken Major League record with six RBI in an inning and he became the first rookie to hit a grand slam in the World Series. He was named the 1951 American League Rookie of the Year and earned consideration for the AL MVP award. The utility infielder, was adept at all positions around the horn and led the American League in double plays at three separate positions and retired with a .984 career fielding percentage with 1,518 assists and 1,385 putouts in 2,950 chances. McDougald’s best season at the plate came in 1956 as he batted .311 with 136 hits and 56 RBI. In 1957, his line drive shot up the middle that drilled Herb Score put Herb on the disabled list for a year and a half and nearly ended his career. McDougald famously said that if Score lost his sight, he would quit the game. Score recovered and returned. The six-time All-Star played on five World Series championship teams (1951-1953, 1956, 1958) and was named the 1958 Lou Gehrig Memorial Award winner as “the player who best exemplified the character and integrity of Gehrig both on and off the field.” Gil McDougald finished his career with 1,291 hits including 187 doubles and 112 home runs, scored 697 runs, drove in 576 RBI and a .276 career batting average.
