Melvin Lloyd Parnell (June 13, 1922 – March 20, 2012) One of the greatest left-handed pitchers in Boston Red Sox history, Mel Parnell dominated the American League from 1948 through 1953. Parnell enjoyed his best season in 1949, earning the AL pitching title with his 25–7 record and 2.77 ERA. In 1956, his last season, he tossed a no-hitter in July at Fenway Park against the White Sox. That feat was not accomplished again at Fenway by a Red Sox leftie until John Lester did it 52 years later in 2008. Sadly, a torn muscle in his elbow cut short Parnell’s great career. After his playing days, Parnell managed in the minors before joining the Red Sox as both a radio and television broadcaster. Mel “Dusty” Parnell was elected to the Red Sox Hall of Fame in 1997. The two-time All-Star known for his inside slider was 89 years old when he died in 2012.
