Erwin Coolidge "Bob" Porterfield (August 10, 1923 – April 28, 1980) Star-crossed and oft-injured Bob Porterfield played 12 Major League seasons and enjoyed most of his success with the Washington Senators. In five seasons with the Senators, he won 67 games, and in 1953 he led the league with 22 wins, 24 complete games, and nine shutouts. Porterfield was an All-Star in 1954 despite a losing record and a league-leading 249 hits allowed. The 6-foot, 190-pound right-hander broke in with the Yankees in 1948, but health woes plagued his early career. The US Army veteran experienced freak accidents, arm soreness, and, in 1950, a vicious beaning that broke his jaw. Porterfield also spent time with the Red Sox, Pirates, and Cubs before wrapping it up in 1959. He pitched in the minors through 1961 and coached at the pro and college level. Porterfield later worked as a welder in North Carolina, where he died at age 56 in 1980.
