Edward Charles Pellagrini (March 13, 1918 – October 11, 2006) Boston native Eddie Pellagrini broke in with the 1946 AL Champion Red Sox and hit a home run in his first MLB at-bat, the second Red Sox player to achieve that feat. Before he played at Fenway Park, Pellagrini played for the Great Lake Bluejackets military team while serving in the US Navy from 1942 to 1945. The versatile infielder was dealt to the Browns in 1947 and also played for the Phillies, Reds, and Pirates. After his playing days, Pellagrini was the head coach at Boston College where in 31 years he won a school-record 359 games and made three trips to the College World Series. Before his death at age 88 in 2006, he was active in the Red Sox boosters’ BoSox Club. Pellagrini is a member of the Boston College Varsity Club Athletic Hall of Fame and the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
