1938 Goudey

The 1938 R323 Goudey Big League “Heads Up” set consists of 48 cards, each one measuring 2-1/2” by 3”. The set’s name is derived from its unprecedented design – one that depicts a player's photographic headshot superimposed on a small cartoon drawing of his body. The issue is also noteworthy for its unique numbering system, one that begins its run with card #241 – picking up where Goudey’s groundbreaking1933 Big League Gum set numerically left off. Cards #241-264 feature plain backgrounds on the fronts, while cards #265-288 bear the same basic design and photo but with the addition of small drawings and comments visible in the background. Backs have player statistical and biographical information. The set boasts an abundance of future Hall of Famers, with 24 different players pictured twice in the set, and is anchored by the rookie cards of Bob Feller (#s 264 and 288), as well as Joe DiMaggio (#250 and #274), Charlie Gehringer (#241 and #265), Al Lopez (#257 and #281) and Jimmie Foxx (#273).
