Willis Hudlin

George Willis Hudlin (May 23, 1906 - August 5, 2002) surrendered Babe Ruth’s 500th home run but owned the New York Yankees winning 14 games against the Bronx Bombers from 1927-1929. Often overshadowed by his fellow pitchers Hall of Famer Bob Feller and All-Star Mel Harder, Hudlin won 157 games in 15 seasons with the Cleveland Indians. Willis played 16 years in the Major Leagues with the Indians (1926-1940), the Senators (1940), the Browns (1940, 1944) and the Giants (1940). From 1927-1937, he won a dozen or more games in 13 of the 16 seasons. Willis utilized a sinker, fastball, curve and changeup and often dropped down to deceive batters throwing side arm. At the end of his career, Hudlin became one of handful of players who spent time with four different clubs in one season, his last. Willis Hudlin finished his career with a 158-156 record in 491 games and 2,613.1 innings pitched, struck out 677 batters and had a 4.41 career ERA.
