1934-36 Batter-Up (R318)

Walter Anton Berger (October 10, 1905 - November 30, 1988) shares the National League rookie home run record (38) with Hall of Famer Frank Robinson and was eclipsed only once in the Major Leagues, 57 years later in 1987 by Oakland’s Mark McGwire (49). Wally played 11 seasons for the Boston Braves (1930-1937), the New York Giants (1937-1938), the Cincinnati Reds (1938-1949) and the Philadelphia Phillies (1940). In 1937, after being traded to the Giants, Berger hits his first home run as a Giant at the same time becoming the 7th player in the National League to hit 200 home runs. Berger was selected to the first four All-Star games and was starting centerfielder in the first two. From 1932-1936, Wally Berger was a perennial MVP candidate finishing 16th or higher in each season. With a league leading home run (34) and RBI (130) totals in 1935, Wally finished sixth in MVP voting. Berger also posted an above average .974 fielding percentage with 3,324 putouts. Wally Berger retired with a .300 career batting average adding 1,550 hits, 809 runs, 242 home runs and 898 RBI.
