William Frederick “Billy” Jurges (May 9, 1908 - March 3, 1997) played the left side of the infield at short and third for 17 seasons with the Chicago Cubs (1931-1938, 1946-1947) and the New York Giants (1939-1945). Billy survived being shot by a distraught ex-girlfriend in 1932 to enjoy a successful career in the big leagues for 15 more years. He was a three-time All-Star selection and made three World Series appearances with the Chicago Cubs, all losing efforts. Billy Jurges finished his career after the 1947 season with 1,613 hits, 721 runs, 656 RBI and a .258 career batting average.
