1931 W517

The 1931 W517 baseball set consists of 54 cards measuring 3” by 4”, much larger than the contemporaries of the era. The creamy stock cardboard cards were distributed in strips and often show the dotted line at the top of bottom used for cutting. Though primarily appearing in a sepia-tone, other colors are known to exist, including blue. Each player’ photograph is centered within a thick border with the player either posed or in portrait style. The player’s name, team and league appear on each, as does the card number. As was the case with many of the strip cards of the time, the W517 are blank-backed. The set is star-heavy with Babe Ruth appear twice (#4 & #20), plus Grover Alexander (#15), Jimmie Foxx (#21), Melvin Ott (#30), Lou Gehrig (#35), Rogers Hornsby (#38) and Lefty Grove (#39) as well as numerous other Hall of Fame enshrinees.
