1920 W516-1-2

The 1920 W516-1-2 set consists of 30 cards, each measuring about 1-1/2” x 2-3/8”. Issued by the International Feature Service, Of the various “W” strip cards issued between 1919 and 1923, this is considered one of the more interesting sets as it depicts the reverse negative images of the inaugural W516-1 set. Card fronts bear a colorized artist rendering of the respective athlete with a color border and a thin black line. A thick, blank border frames all of the elements. The player’s name, team, position and the card number all are identified in “hand-lettered” print at the bottom of the frame. Card backs are blank. The set has a wealth of Hall of Fame and star talent including Babe Ruth (#1), Tris Speaker (#5), Ty Cobb (#6), Rogers Hornsby (#7), Walter Johnson (#8), and Grover Cleveland Alexander (#9). Several of the cards have the players’ name misspelled or misidentified including Hornsby, Ray Schalk (#4), Benny Kauff (#16), Harry Hooper (#27), Eddie Roush (#29), and Dave Bancroft (#30). Like all W-cards, the W516-1 series were strip cards that had to be cut from strips available at various outlets such as grocery or candy stores. They also could be purchased as full strips. These collectibles are scarcely found in their original state, as surviving singles were most often damaged at the time of cutting.
