Wilbert Robinson

1915/16 M101-5 Sporting News

Wilbert Robinson (June 29, 1863 - August 8, 1934) was a career catcher and member of the Baltimore Orioles National League pennant winners in 1894, 1895 and 1896. Though he played over 1,300 games as catcher for the Orioles, he gained Hall of Fame status as the manager of the Brooklyn Robins (1914-1931), guiding them to two NL pennants in 1916 and 1920. Referred to as Uncle Robbie, the bombastic and jovial Robinson was an excellent player turned manager, masterfully guiding pitching staffs due to his playing days as a catcher. Robinson finished his managerial career with the Robins with a record of 1,397-1,395. Upon Robinson’s insistence, he stated he could catch a baseball from an airplane. In true player prank fashion the ball was replaced with a grapefruit that exploded upon impact with Robinson’s glove. From that day further, Wilbert referred to airplanes as fruit flies. The Veterans Committee elected Wilbert Robinson to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1945.
