Terry “Cotton Top” Turner was a no-nonsense, hard-nosed, fundamentally solid player. He is still Cleveland’s all-time leader in games played, with 1,619 collected over 15 seasons. At 5 feet 8 inches, and 149 pounds, Turner was once described by a sportswriter as “a little rabbit of a man with the guts of a commando.” Known for how well he played three infield positions, he led American League shortstops in fielding percentage on four different occasions, broke up 3 no-hitters, and ruined Chief Bender’s shot at a perfect game. Turner’s best year was 1912, when he batted .308. He led the league in sacrifice hits in 1914. He stole 25 or more bases four times and had a career high of 31 swipes in 1910. Most important, Turner is known for pioneering the headfirst slide. He returned to private life in Cleveland in 1919, where he was a chief superintendent of the Cleveland Street Department until his retirement in 1952. He was selected to the Top 100 Greatest Indians’ roster in 2001.
