Eppa Rixey Jr.

1915/16 M101-5 Sporting News

Eppa Rixey (May 3, 1891 - February 28, 1963) never spent a single day in the minor leagues advancing to the Majors directly from the University of Virginia in 1912. Rixey pitched 21 seasons for the Philadelphia Phillies (1912-1917, 1919-1920) and the Cincinnati Reds (1921-1933) compiling a record of 266-251 with 1,350 strikeouts and a career ERA of 3.15. Though Rixey never really set the world on fire, his consistency and durability kept him in the starting rotation for much of his career. In 1922, Eppa Rixey led the National League in wins with 25 and at the time of his retirement had more victories than any other left-hander in National League history. In 1921, Rixey gave up only one home run in 301 innings pitched. The Veterans Committee elected Eppa Rixey to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1963.
