A fine all-around player, Bobby Byrne was an excellent gloveman as well as a solid leadoff hitter. Byrne was acquired by the Pirates from the Cards in August 1909, and contributed to their run down the stretch all the way to the World Series championship. In 1910 he batted .296 and led the NL in hits (178) and doubles (43). He later played on the 1917 White Sox World Series championship team. After his MLB days, Byrne managed the Miami Indians of the Southwestern League in 1921 and the Saginaw Aces of the Michigan-Ontario League in 1922. After retiring from the game, he worked for the city of St. Louis, a steel company, and also owned a bowling alley. A New Year’s Eve baby, he passed away on his 80th birthday.
