“Wild Bill” Donovan earned his nickname by usually finishing as one of the league leaders in bases on balls. In 1901 he led the league in wins with 25. An extremely durable pitcher, Donovan led the league in games pitched in 1901 (45) and complete games in 1903 (34). His best season was 1907, when he led the Tigers to the pennant with a 25–4 record, posting a 2.19 ERA. He was a player/manager in the majors until 1921. Donovan was killed in a train wreck in 1923 while managing in the minors. He was killed in the lower berth while George Weiss (future general manager of the Yankees and the Mets, who was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1971) slept above him and was not injured.
