"Shauno" Collins - 1915/16 M101-4 Sporting News

John Francis “Shano” Collins (1885-1955) was one of the top right fielders in the Major Leagues during the 1910s and 1920s with excellent speed and a strong and accurate arm. Though he was originally tapped to play first base, Collins’ fielding ability at first was atrocious and it was deemed that he was better suited for the outfield. He began his career with the Chicago White Sox (1910-1920) and finished with the Boston Red Sox (1921-1925). Over the course of his career, Shano, a play on the Gaelic name for John, was particularly adept at reaching third with the bases loaded. He holds the Major League record for most triples with the bases loaded (8) and set a single season record with three in 1918 that stood for 31 years until Elmer Valo matched it in 1949. Collins was a key member of the 1917 Chicago White Sox American League pennant winners as he tagged the game-winning hit on September 21st to clinch the pennant. Shano then batted .286 with six hits as the White Sox beat the New York Giants in six games to win the 1917 World Series. He again helped the talented White Sox team reach the 1919 World Series before the infamous Black Sox Scandal when eight Chicago players were accused of throwing the series. John Francis Collins was listed as one of the “wronged parties”, as were many of his teammates, who were defrauded out of $1,784. Shano went on to play for the often cellar-dwelling Red Sox before retiring from baseball. Over 16 years in the Major Leagues, Shano Collins batted .264 with 1,687 hits, 747 runs, 226 stolen bases and 709 RBI. Shano managed the Red Sox for two seasons compiling a dismal 73-134 record in 208 games.
