Mike Mowrey - 1915/16 M101-4 Sporting News

Harry Harlan “Mike” Mowrey (1884-1947) was one of the top third basemen of his era in the early 1900s and had a unique style of knocked down hard grounders with his glove hand, then picking up the ball barehanded and hurling it to first base. However, his method was effective and he twice led his respective league in fielding percentage for third basemen. Mike caught the eye of Cincinnati Reds scouts while playing with Savannah of the South Atlantic League in 1905 and soon purchased his contract. His Major League debut came on September 24, 1905 when he played both sides of a doubleheader. But, he had some work to do as he committed seven errors in seven games with the Reds while batting .267 that season. He improved to .321 in 21 games in 1906 and then took over regular duties at third base in 1907. However, he lost that position in 1908 due to poor production at the plate coupled with a knee injury. After five seasons with the Reds (1905-1909), Mike was sent to the St. Louis Cardinals where he again took over at third base. In 1910, Mowrey enjoyed his best season as he batted .282 with 138 hits, 24 doubles and 70 RBI. Because the Deadball Game in the early 1900s was very bunt oriented, it was the corner infielders’ responsibility to field those bunts and Mike Mowrey, according to Alvin H. Spink, was one of “the best fielder of bunts in either league.” After five years in St. Louis (1909-1913), he played with the Pittsburgh Pirates (1914), the Pittsburgh Rebels (1915) of the short-lived Federal League and the Brooklyn Robins (1916-1917). After leading all Federal League third basemen in fielding percentage (.959), Brooklyn signed him and he proceeded to lead all NL third baggers in fielding percentage (.965). He helped lead the Robins to the National League pennant before losing to the Boston Red Sox in five games. Mike Mowrey played 13 seasons in the Major Leagues where he batted .256 with 1,099 hits, 485 runs scored, 167 stolen bases and 461 RBI. He also posted a .942 fielding percentage.
