David James Bancroft (1891-1972) is considered one of the top fielders in the history of baseball. During 16 seasons (all in the National League) with the Philadelphia Phillies (1915-1920), the New York Giants (1920-1923), the Boston Braves (1924-1927) and the Brooklyn Robins (1928-1929), Bancroft had a .944 fielding percentage with 4,623 putouts in 1,873 games. “Dave Bancroft set a major league record for chances handled by a shortstop in a season – 984 in 1922.” The career National League shortstop also batted .279 with 2,004 hits and 591 RBI. Bancroft earned the nickname “Beauty” by shouting it to opposing players after good pitches. The Veterans Committee elected David James Bancroft to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1971.
