Collecting the 1976 O-Pee-Chee Hockey Card Set – A Set About Transitions, Tiger and Trottier

It has been 40 years since the 1976 O-Pee-Chee hockey card set was released, which is hard to believe for some of us. This 396-card issue is home to some key cards such as the #115 Bryan Trottier and #373 Tiger Williams rookies or the #213 Bobby Orr, but it is absent the player power of some other hockey of the era. What it may lack in player power, the set more than makes up for in visual appeal. Regarded as one of the more colorful sets of the decade, this set does have its fans. In the following article, we take an in-depth look into this vibrant-looking issue.

Collecting the 1987 O-Pee-Chee Hockey Card Set – Searching for Its Identity Amongst 1980s Hockey Sets

kareem-abdul-jabbarLeading up to the release of the 1987 O-Pee-Chee set, collectors had been spoiled to some degree. In the preceding three years, O-Pee-Chee issues were anchored by a staple rookie card, which included the likes of Steve Yzerman (1984), Mario Lemieux (1985) and Patrick Roy (1986). The 1987 O-Pee-Chee set is still lacking the identity those earlier issues share, but that doesn’t stop some collectors from building the set. While they might not be considered major rookie cards, this set does offer several debuts of star players and the final card of Wayne Gretzky in an Edmonton Oilers’ uniform. In the next piece, we talk to the collectors who find plenty of appeal in this release.

Set Registry Spotlight

Jim’s Mecca Champions – 1910 Champions (T218)
The 1910 Champions set (T218) is unique in that it contains subjects ranging from boxers to track & field stars to swimmers and more. Boxing legend Jack Johnson is considered the most recognizable sports figure and valuable card in this diverse set. Each subject is captured with the use of beautiful, color artwork in this 153-card tobacco set. While most of the backs feature Mecca or Hassan brand tobacco advertising, some of the cards have been found with Tolstoi backs as well. The 2015 winner for Best Vintage Miscellaneous Sports Set of the Year is the only set in registry history to achieve a GPA of PSA NM 7 or better (7.17), taking the top spot on our All-Time Finest list. Clean Sweep’s Major Auction: Now Open. Ends February 3, 2016

Clean Sweep Auction opens 2016 with one of our most exciting auctions ever. The centerpiece of this auction is a very high grade collection of sets and near-sets from 1939 through 1969. These are mostly from a single owner who worked tirelessly at shows in the 1990s and early 2000s, assembling all of these the old fashioned way, card-by-card. These are exceptionally well centered and fine sets, and perhaps best of all, have not been seen on the market until now and are fresh to the current hobby.
