1960 World Series   The 1960 World Series - One for the Ages
Baseball season is less than a month away. As Spring Training moves along, teams are trying to get in shape for the long, grueling 162-game season. The goal is the same for all of them... they want to be crowned World Series champions in 2011. Over the years, there have been some fantastic battles in the postseason. Most people feel that the 1975 World Series war between the Boston Red Sox and Cincinnati Reds ranks number one but one that also gets a lot of votes in the 1960 World Series between the New York Yankees and Pittsburgh Pirates. In the following article, using the special World Series cards from the 1961 Topps set as illustrations, we revisit the October classic. More...

PSA Set Registry: 1952 Bowman Baseball, The Forgotten Set?   PSA Set Registry: 1952 Bowman Baseball, The Forgotten Set?
The 1952 Bowman baseball set is one of the most beautiful issues ever manufactured yet, somehow, it remains overlooked compared to many of its counterparts during the 1950s. Containing a plethora of stars including Yogi Berra, Ted Williams, Willie Mays, Stan Musial and Mickey Mantle, this 252-card set is often considered an afterthought to the classic Topps set from the same year. In the following piece, we take an in-depth look at a vintage baseball set that just might be a sleeper in the trading card world. More...

Mike's Comics - The Number One Current Finest 1973 Topps Comics Baseball Set
Over the years, Topps produced many specialty sets to compliment their dominant base issues. Topps gave us things like coins, tattoos, stickers and scratch-offs to keep collectors doing what they do best - collect. Now, some of these were actually released to the public and others were of the Test variety, never quite making it to mass production and distribution. That made them even more desirable. During the 1960s, Topps seemed to kick that plan into overdrive and that continued into the 1970s. One of the unique issues Topps produced was the 1973 Topps Comics Test set. Containing a host of Hall of Famers like Hank Aaron, Johnny Bench and Nolan Ryan, this 24-piece set has a lot of star power within. As a result of the star selection and scarcity of the issue, these comics are pricey. The Ryan alone sells for thousands of dollars in virtually any condition. This is the only complete set in registry history to reach an impressive set rating of 8.60. Click here to view this award winning set.

Question: I saw an image of the PSA Gem Mint 10 1979 O-Pee-Chee Gretzky rookie coming up for sale this spring in SCP Auctions. How did it still receive a "10" grade with the edges so rough-looking?

Answer: For those collectors not familiar with the difference between O-Pee-Chee cuts and regular Topps cuts, the rough edges are exactly what you would want to see on the O-Pee-Chee version. In fact, over the years, O-Pee-Chee was well known for the rough-cut appearance on their cards, which were very different from the smooth look on Topps issues from the same year. While the degree of rough-cut varies, if you ever see a totally sharp and smooth 1979 O-Pee-Chee Gretzky rookie card – run! That is not the way they were made and, most likely, it means the card was cut from a sheet or trimmed.
