1939 Play Ball Set - A Revolutionary and Historic Baseball Issue   1939 Play Ball Set - A Revolutionary and Historic Baseball Issue
The 1939 Play Ball set is one of the most important sets in the hobby and the strength of the set lies, primarily, with one card - the sole Ted Williams rookie card. The 162-card set was the first of three popular Play Ball sets that were distributed from 1939-1941. The first set was comprised of black and white photos and is extremely simplistic in nature, but that is part of its appeal. In the following piece, collectors discuss why they purse this vintage treasure. More...

Rich Consola - A Hunk, A Hunk of Elvis Expertise   Rich Consola - A Hunk, A Hunk of Elvis Expertise
Rich Consola, a consultant of PSA/DNA, is considered by most to be the foremost authority on Elvis autographs but he was an Elvis fan long before he became such a noteworthy hobby expert. Consola took the passion he found in the icon's music and used it for good, to help sort the good from the bad in a hobby that, at times, can be a treacherous place for collectors of truly scarce signatures. Question: Is it true that Joe DiMaggio refused to sign items related to Marilyn Monroe?

Answer: Well, at some point during his life and post divorce, DiMaggio decided to not sign items related to his former wife. That said, he did sign some items during their relationship. In fact, a baseball signed (by both) during their relationship sold for almost $200,000 a few years back. In addition, some hobbyists tricked DiMaggio into signing Monroe items. For example, some dealers would conceal the Monroe-related item by folding or covering the content in a unique way, so DiMaggio couldn't see what we was signing. In other cases, DiMaggio was asked to sign blank items like paper or canvases. After DiMaggio would sign, the owner would have an artist draw or paint images of Monroe on the piece. So, while they are fairly scarce, these items do exist as a result.
