Joe Orlando   The Deal Killer
The hobby has changed over the years, but one of the things that has remained consistent is the competition between some buyers and between some sellers. As a result, hobbyists have used different strategies to buy collectibles for less money or to enhance their chances of making more sales. The problem is that some of these hobbyists have taken it too far, harming others in the process and ruining potential deals to benefit themselves. In the following piece, Joe Orlando explores the impact of The Deal Killer. More...

1971-72 Topps Basketball Set   1971-72 Topps Basketball Set - A Groovy Hobby Trip
The 1971 Topps basketball set had two tough acts to follow. In 1969 and 1970, Topps produced two very popular Tall Boy issues and both contained key rookie cards like those of Lew Alcindor (Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) and Pete Maravich. While somewhat overlooked, the 1971 Topps set features more cards than either or its predecessors and contains a few of its own Hall of Fame rookies like Nate Archibald, Dave Cowens, Rick Barry and Dan Issel. Question: I have encountered some autographs where the player only signed their first name instead of their whole name. Is that considered less desirable?

Answer: Generally speaking, yes, autographs that contain only the first name are usually less desirable than full name signatures. You may have seen letters signed "Babe" instead of Babe Ruth or "Lou" instead of Lou Gehrig. If a person was writing to a very close friend, they would often sign the letter with their first name only. That isn't always the case but it happens often. As a result, those items tend to sell for less than items that exhibit full name signatures because collectors want to see the entire name of the signer. There have been exceptions... where first name signatures have sold for tremendous prices. In those cases, however, it was the content of the letter or the importance of the item itself that carried the value... not the signature
