Joe Orlando   Collectibles and Logic
Trying to apply logic to this hobby can be, at times, a fruitless endeavor. With such a strong emotional component to the collectibles and in a market that is often driven by hype, it is almost impossible to predict the success of some products or the demise of others. It can be both comical and frustrating. In the following piece, Joe Orlando explores the lack of logic that often appears in our hobby. More...

1910-1911 C56   1910-11 Imperial Tobacco Hockey (C56) Set - Puck Pioneers and Jack Marshall
Like baseball, the sport of hockey enjoys a rich history that far exceeds some of the other major sports like basketball. In addition, pre-war hockey cards are extremely important and desirable. In fact, hockey cards are considerably tougher than their baseball counterparts both in existing copies and condition. In the following article, we explore one of the classic cards issues - the 1910 C56 set - to picture the legends of the ice. More...

Question: Stephen Strasburg, as you know, has taken baseball by storm and makes his debut this week against the Pirates. Do you think his cards are a good investment?

Answer: For those people who like to speculate and try to make money on modern rookie cards, Strasburg is certainly an intriguing player. The problem is that the expectations are so high for Strasburg, and for other prospects these days, that it is almost impossible for any of them to live up to the hype - no matter how well they perform. While Strasburg certainly seems like the real deal as a pitcher, the volatility of modern-era rookies can be risky because of the lofty expectations and chance of injury - which could later a pitcher's entire career.

Value aside, which of the following Los Angeles Lakers basketball rookie cards do you feel is the most popular?
  1. 1961 Fleer Elgin Baylor
  2. 1961 Fleer Jerry West
  3. 1980 Topps Magic Johnson
  4. 1996 Topps Kobe Bryant
