Memory Lane Ready to Launch Huge Spring Auction: Bidding Opens March 26, Ends April 17, 2010
"All encompassing" might be the best phrase to use when describing Memory Lane Inc's upcoming spring catalog auction. 1175 lots of high-grade and rare sports cards and memorabilia will be on the block when the company opens bidding March 26th. Every decade from the late 19th century to the current era is represented. Among the lots are one-of-a-kind sports cards, multiple Hall of Famer autographs, game-used and game-worn items, an Abe Lincoln cancelled check and an even an important historical piece from a landmark sports court case. There are multiple Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio and Mickey Mantle autographs and a huge run of vintage sports card sets too. Click here to read more.
Question: I am collecting autographed Baseball Hall of Fame Plaques and know there are some major rarities in the set, including some that are impossible to find signed for one reason or another. How scarce is a signed Babe Ruth plaque?
Answer: Autographed Baseball Hall of Fame Plaques are great collectibles and, as you mentioned, some are quite rare. Babe Ruth is one of them. While there is no way to be certain how many exist in total, only a handful of authentic examples have been discovered, with the last example selling for well in excess of $50,000 due to the rarity. The reason for the rarity is that there was a very small window for Ruth to sign them prior to his death in 1948. The ones that were signed are very desirable.
