Question: How much does performance affect value when it comes to collectibles?

Answer: Obviously, performance can have a major impact on the value of collectibles, particularly in sports, but popularity is much more important. Now, granted, in order to reach a certain level of popularity, you often have to be very good at what you do. That said; there are many examples in sports and non-sports where the popularity of the person outweighs their accomplishments. Most people think Willie Mays was a better player than Mickey Mantle but there is no comparison when it comes to the value of their collectibles. Was Elvis Presley really one of best singers of all-time? Were Marilyn Monroe and James Dean truly great actors? Sometimes, individuals become icons and their legend grows even more over time... despite the fact that others may have been -- technically -- better. There are many factors that come into play.

Which of the following sports streaks is most impressive to you?
  1. Cal Ripken's consecutive game streak of 2,632
  2. Brett Favre's consecutive game streak of 291 and counting
  3. Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak
  4. Orel Hershiser's 59 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings
