Question: I have an autographed baseball that I obtained in the early 1990s. At the time, the ball was pure white but now the ball has an orange/yellow/brown discoloration on a few panels. What causes this?

Answer: Great question. Often, even baseballs that are kept out of direct sunlight and stored correctly can exhibit condition problems of this nature. First, some baseballs were manufactured with water that was not distilled -- allowing for enzymes to "turn" the ball over time. In most cases, however, the oils from the signer's or handler's fingertips can alter the ball over time. It usually will not show up right away but that is why it is so important that autographed baseballs are handled correctly and cautiously -- even when they are being signed.
