PSA EDITORIAL
PSA Q & A Question: Why are there some huge discrepancies in value when it comes to the superstars and all the other players in certain regional sets?Answer: Regional issues can be very collectable. These issues are often scarce and some of them have great designs. The reason you might see huge differences in value between the top stars like Mickey Mantle or Sandy Koufax and the rest of the set comes down to demand for the entire set. Player-based collections (which are often built around stars) usually include regional issues. For example, if I collect Sandy Koufax cards, I would probably want to add a 1958 Bell Brand card to my collection to compliment my regular issue Koufax cards. That said, the semi-stars and commons from those sets get attention, primarily, from set builders. If the set receives a lot of interest from set builders, these cards seem to perform well but most regional sets do not possess the mass appeal that mainstream sets do. As a result, the non-superstars can be obtained at a fraction of the prices realized from Mantle and Koufax cards because most of the demand is hyper-focused on the big name players.
