In the world's first online sports autograph session, Quarterbacks Doug Flutie of the Buffalo Bills and Peyton Manning of the Indianapolis Colts will sign their names on memorabilia items live on the Internet. The signatures will be certified with a DNA-laced invisible mark.

The precedent setting event will be conducted February 12 and 13, 1999 from Atlanta, GA, and sports fans can watch it at All items autographed by Flutie and Manning will be "tagged" with a special DNA mark by Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA), Newport Beach, CA, the world's largest sports memorabilia and collectibles authentication and certification service. PSA used the same PSA/DNA Guaranteed Authentic technique last October to certify Mark McGwire home run baseball number 70.

"This technique, developed by DNA Technologies, Inc. of Los Angeles, is identical to the anti-counterfeiting tactics that will be used on tickets and security passes at the 2000 Olympic Games in Australia," explained Steve Rocchi, PSA President. "We've been using this system since last summer to certify the autographs of Sammy Sosa and other sports stars, and we're pleased to now add Doug Flutie and Peyton Manning to the PSA/DNA Guaranteed Authentic line up." After witnessing each signature, the autographed items are marked by PSA with a specially synthesized DNA compound. The ink is invisible to the naked eye, but easily seen when viewed with a special laser set to the proper light frequency.

1998 Sullivan Award winner Manning will sign February 12 from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. (Eastern) and Flutie, a 1998 All-Pro, will sign February 13 from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Established in 1991, PSA examines and grades approximately 70,000 sports cards and non-sports trading cards each month. The PSA/DNA service was developed in 1998 to provide collectors with a way to build their confidence in the legitimacy of the items they purchase. PSA/DNA Guaranteed Authentic hopes to eliminate the problems of counterfeits by labeling items in a way they can be sold time after time with each new buyer confident he or she is spending money on an authentic item.
