The Wellness Community Valley/Ventura is pleased to present "Celebrating Life through Sports: A Salute to Baseball." This baseball event features the 1909 Honus Wagner baseball card and "Shoeless" Joe Jackson's Black Betsy bat. The most valuable baseball card and baseball bat in the world will be on display, together, for the first time in their history.

The Salute to Baseball is scheduled for March 7, 8, & 9, 2003 at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, CA. On Friday evening, March 7th, the three-day event kicks off with a dinner/auction/private exhibition. On Saturday, March 8th & Sunday, March 9th starting at 10:00 a.m. and finishing at 5:00 p.m., the exhibit will be open to the public at an advanced ticket price of $9.00. Proceeds from this event benefit The Wellness Community Valley/Ventura and local youth baseball and softball teams.

As mentioned earlier, the 1909 Honus Wagner baseball card is the most valuable baseball card in the world, valued at over 1.2 million dollars. The Black Betsy, valued at over ½ million dollars, has only been shown in public twice and never on the West Coast. Other rare and valuable baseball memorabilia from such Hall of Famers as Mickey Mantle, Sandy Koufax, Ty Cobb, Ted Williams, Babe Ruth, and Lou Gehrig will also be on display. Members of the women's professional baseball league have graciously volunteered to participate and will include items from their men's and women's league memorabilia collection to the exhibition. This will be a once in a lifetime event for baseball enthusiasts in Southern California.

The Wellness Community Valley/Ventura is pleased to announce Steve Yeager and Jay Johnston, former Los Angeles Dodgers and 1981 World Series champions, will be special guest speakers at the event on Friday night, March 7.

PSA (, the world's largest sportscard and sports memorabilia authentication service, a division of Collectors Universe, Inc., will be nearby at the East Valley Sheriff's Station, 2101 East Olsen Road, Thousand Oaks, California, to accept items submitted by the public for authentication and grading. Fifty percent of the certification fees collected will be donated to The Wellness Community Valley/Ventura.

This baseball showcase event will promote healthy lifestyles to families and young children while directly benefiting patients fighting cancer and their families. At The Wellness Community cancer patients receive information and emotional support and the opportunity to find people who will stand shoulder to shoulder with them as they fight their battles -- people who will understand what they are experiencing and finding difficult to express, and who will inspire them and give them courage when they need it. All services provided by The Wellness Community Valley/Ventura are free to our participants and their families. The Wellness Community Valley/Ventura is one of 25 branches internationally, all locally founded and funded. Each Wellness Community is individually incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

"Celebrating Life through Sports: A Salute to Baseball" is being sponsored by Neftin Westlake, Ventura County Star and Jano Graphics.
