BULLETIN—The finest known Honus Wagner baseball card from the T-206 series has set another record! On Saturday evening July 15, 2000 the PSA-graded and authenticated (PSA 8 NM-MT) card fell under the hammer for $1,265,000, breaking its own price record of $640,500 set in 1996. Known simply as “The Wagner Card,” this historical treasure now holds the three highest auction records for a sportscard.
The card was sold as Lot #1 of the Robert Edwards/eBay “Baseball Cards and Memorabilia” sale of July 15-16, 2000. The Wagner T-206 card has been a recognized rarity for generations, but this particular specimen attracted worldwide attention in 1991 when it sold in a Sotheby's sale for a then unprecedented $451,000. The card was purchased at that sale by hockey great Wayne Gretzky and then-LA Kings owner Bruce McNall. After certification by Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA) the card was sold again, this time to Wal-Mart stores. The discount-retail firm then gave “The Wagner Card” away in a promotion, and the winner put it up for auction in 1996.
With the sale of this card PSA set a record of its own. Of the 27 highest prices ever paid for a baseball card at auction, 20 of those cards were certified by PSA.
