The American Tobacco Company introduced T9 Turkey Red boxing cabinet cards in 1910. The set consists of 26 cards (#s 51-76). An additional 100 cards bear baseball designs and are designated as a separate T3 entity. Each T9 card bears a colorful and highly detailed player depiction on large, thick cardstock measuring 5-3/4” x 8”. The lithography is “framed” by an ornate gold border designed to resemble a picture frame with the athlete’s identify noted in a nameplate design at the bottom edge. The cabinet cards were designed for “preferred” tobacco customers and available via a mail-away promotion that ran in 1910 and 1911. Collectors consider the T9 Turkey Red boxing cards every bit as striking as their baseball counterparts. The set is highlighted by all of the era’s greatest pugilists, including Abe Attell (#52), James Jeffries (#55), Battling Nelson (#57), Sam Langford (#65), Joe Jeannette (#68), and Jack Johnson (#76), and is widely regarded as one of the most attractive and desirable of all boxing issues. However, because of their large size, careful storage and preservation were problematic, and high-grade examples are quite difficult to find.
